Almost every Sunday morning I wake up to the Food Network. In my sleep, I can identify the time by the airing of the show that is breaking into my subconscious. Shortly after I open an eyelid, I grab my phone and go to my TD Jakes Bible App. This app has so many wonderful features but my favorite is the Live Stream feature which takes me directly into Potter’s House Worship at 7 am Pacific Time Zone. By the time the first worship song is over, I have both eyes open and am stirring while starting my morning.

I love my Sunday routine. I begin with good worship and an INCREDIBLE word from Bishop Jakes that almost always provides gut-punching wisdom. On one particular Sunday, Bishop said something seemingly minuscule but so incredibly profound. It wasn’t even part of his message, but rather a call to action for those in need of guidance from the Lord.

Bishop stated, “Put your phones up and get your knees out…” I don’t even remember the rest of his sentence. That initial part of his sentence spoke to the very depth of my being.

See, in today’s society, we are quick to conduct personal business on social media. We communicate and medicate via social media. If we need a visual fix, no problem, we can just scroll, select and view. If we want to laugh uproariously, no problem, we can simply find the genius of Twitter posts and cackle until we’re contented. If we’re troubled about life, no problem, we hop on over to FB and share our angst with followers. See a theme here? All of these require nothing more than a phone and a wifi connection.

What’s the problem? None except we forget to talk to the Lord about our issues because we go straight to our phones and either a) medicate or b) overshare with the public. Where is HE in this equation, one might ask? He is waiting patiently for us to seek HIS counsel.

We can’t be so dependent on the opinion of others that we forget to consult the Lord. We can’t be so attuned to what “mama n ’em” have to say…what our girlfriends have to say…what our significant other has to say; that we forget what God has to say.

Take our knees out? This simply implies that we need to communicate with the Most-High. Let’s share our hurts and heartbreaks with Him. Let’s share our victories, too. He cares about how we are getting along in this world and rejoices when we speak to Him. When we put our phones up and take our knees out we are practicing proximity to our loving father.

Do you remember the last time you shared something important or insignificant with the Lord? Feel free to share below. 🙂

You could certainly see your enthusiasm in the work you write.

The world hopes for even more passionate writers such as you who are not afraid
to say how they believe. All the time go after your heart.

Agreed!

Karina Castorena · May 21, 2018 at 11:23 pm

I agree! People, myself included, do tend to go online for a laugh or to share what they are feeling. I never realized it until now, I guess I was so used to it and made it into a habit. I used to tell everything to the man upstairs or to my loved ones that were with him. But now I realized I stopped doing that for some odd reason. Maybe because social media consumed my life so much I forgot to put my phone down when it came to sharing things or need a laugh. I put my phone down when it comes down to associating with people but I never put it down for other things. This post is brilliant and so relevant to todays society. I love it!

Great point, Karina! We live in a society in which we tend to anesthetize ourselves with technology, ‘stuff’, and/or people.

This is so right . People go straight to social media and vent but won’t vent to the lord they feel like doing that won’t do anything . But if we vent to fb or Twitter it’s practically the same thing . You sometimes won’t get a message asking if your okay or whatever the situation is .

Really lovely post! Bishop Jakes sounds like an exceptional person who brings light to those blinded by distractions. I remember being a young child and facing the moonlight and sitting down with my knees together and hands close to the heart pointing towards the moonlight gaze; saying what a wonderful life I am presently in and how fortunate I am to be so loved.

This article was a good one, However, not one I can agree on much..we might run to social media to vent about our problems or make us feel better but you don’t know if someone is having a word with God privately and picking up their phone every Sunday morning just as you would. Nice saying for those who don’t though

Technology does play a big role in our lives that we sometimes we forget that there is more to the world than what we see on social media, that there is life outside the internet. We need to stop seeking others approval as long as you have the Lords and your own.

I agree with this post in so many ways because now in days all we seem to do is be on our phones as much as i hate to say it and see it. We tend to share our thoughts and everything we’re feeling with social media instead of speaking to the lord and also with our accomplishments.

It’s very true . Sometimes we forget that we still need to keep faith in god and forget about society for a moment

I feel like this is one of the many reasons why people are unhappy. We run to our social media outlets that make us feel better for a little bit so we can ignore the bigger issue.

Grecia Magana · May 14, 2018 at 4:01 pm

Yes, we are so focused on the media and technology. Its taken over. We wake up every morning and look at our phones, we even are woken with our phones with an alarm. Its increasing rapidly and has influenced many many things. Its impacted the world in all ways, good bad, inspiring, etc. I have little cousins that cant live without it. They need and use it 24/7 and are influenced greatly that they sometimes see it as there best friend. We are so hung up on the media that we forget the little simple things that life gives us. Going outside and enjoying a day out in the park. Reading a book! Hobbies other than looking at our phone and doing nothing. If you use it, use it when needed. We lost touch with nature and love and friends. Create memories or just create in general. Use what we have within ourselves to adventure off instead of looking at what is thrown at us to “entertain” us.

I love this post!! We are so focused on social media that we are missing the big picture. Everlasting life!!! God has pulled me threw some hard times. I need to reconnect with his love.

    admin · May 14, 2018 at 10:59 am

Yes, Nathalia! We are really focused on social media in our society. Sometimes we miss the bigger picture. Glad you enjoyed the post. 🙂

I believe social media is a very big problem because people go put their business out their, but they don’t realize that they could always ask for a better day by praying or even speaking to a person who could understand in person. Social media is just a easy way for people to put out their business, but in reality it shouldn’t be that way.

    admin · May 14, 2018 at 11:10 am

Great points! Social media is largely impersonal and so it boggles the mind why some individuals share such personal details on the platforms.

Favi · May 10, 2018 at 3:44 pm

you were so right about todays society they tend to take their problems to social media it were everyone goes to speak out

Anissa · May 10, 2018 at 3:25 pm

Sometimes we forget about what is real, from time to time I do pray and apologize for not praying more often. When I do good things happen always. Don’t forget the higher power.

Rene · May 10, 2018 at 3:16 pm

It is true that we seek help from others instead of asking help from our Lord or parents. Phones and WIFI can overcome a lot of people. Technology can change the world. I think it is important to share our thoughts or our situations with our parents, not to the media.

Christian cruz · May 10, 2018 at 3:12 pm

The last time I remember sharing a thought with the Lord was as a teenager. Yes, I am guilty of always turning to my phone when I’m in stress or boredom. Maybe putting it away and sharing my feelings with the Lord should give me more of what I’m asking for.

Manuel Payan · May 10, 2018 at 3:03 pm

Social media is the most important thing in this society for a business i think social media big now for upcoming generation

tina weaver · May 10, 2018 at 2:53 pm

Honestly, phones need to be put down period. Whether you believe in a higher source, spiritual guide, or nothing at all. It is always a good thing to take to time to learn and be one with your surroundings. Even if it is just for a walk around the corner or a nature hike. Get off the computer and become one with nature and yourself again.

    admin · May 10, 2018 at 4:50 pm

Absolutely! No matter who we believe in, it is essential to be aware of our environment; to be present in the moment. When was the last time you saw lots of kids outside playing like we did back in the day? :-]

Sandra Leonhardt · May 10, 2018 at 2:49 pm

I totally agree that technology is taking over. We just need to go outside and go play and enjoy the sun

    admin · May 10, 2018 at 4:45 pm

Indeed! We should enjoy nature a lot more. We should be present in life instead of just on social media. 😉
