Who is in the driver’s seat of your life?

I recently had a great conversation with a gal pal from work. We quickly did a wellness check to ensure that our worlds were blessed, then we stumbled into a curriculum and instruction discussion. We were lamenting about the students who regularly take shortcuts and call it success because it’s all about the grade and not about the process. We were groaning as we shared stories of adult learners who refuse to use feedback to enhance their final product, thereby submitting assignments with the same mistakes for the duration of the semester. We celebrated the successes of students who used feedback, attended office hours, and accessed appropriate resources with the hope of becoming better students-not just to obtain a good score in the course. As we cackled and ‘amened’ one another, my friend stated, “They must realize that they can’t Uber themselves to their destiny. They can’t expect someone else to drive them to success!” I yelped and almost threw the ENTIRE phone because of the import of the sentiment.

How often have we grown weary as we stumbled along and relied on someone else to help us? Expected another individual to throw us a lob? Gotten perturbed when someone we wanted to assist us did not?? The truth is that we are responsible for ourselves. Our choices are our choices. If we want success to happen in our lives, we must be intentional. We must set goals, create action steps and begin an active pursuit of success.

We cannot blame others for our missteps and/or failures along the way. We can’t tie our success to the actions of others. We must work diligently with a level of independence that negates the actions of others. Let’s work steadily toward each goal that we’ve set for ourselves. This means living each day in forward-motion towards each goal. Look at this proverb about sluggards:

Reflection quote:

How long will you lie there, O slacker? When will you get up from your sleep? (Proverbs 6:9)

We should not expect success to happen if we are not actively engaged in the pursuit of our dreams. Yes, balance is essential. Take care of self. Rest and self-care are important. But we should not be spending more time on these endeavors than we are with the building process. Wake up from the slumber of inaction. Where do you want to be in 6 months? Create measurable action steps so that the goal can be attained. Use a calendar to help keep track of those action steps. Utilize the calendar like it’s a business plan that you are implementing. You are the business and your revenue is a well-lived life.

Reflection quote:

He who gathers in summer is a wise son; he who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame. (Proverbs 10:5)

Final thoughts:

Your primary job is you. Therefore your goals should be front and center on your daily agenda. Do the work that is required to becoming an enhanced you. It may be difficult. maybe even tedious-but you’re worth it. 🙂

Colin 😉
